Charles Edward “Pete” Harris Charles Edward “Pete” Harris, 72, of Troutdale, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Pete proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. Following his military service, he devoted many years to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, where he worked with the U.S. Forest Service. The mountains and the people he worked alongside became an important part of his life, and his Mount Rogers work family held a special place in his heart. He and his wife, Mary, had a love for auctions and yard sales. They cherished their time together enjoying this activity, and Pete actually went to school to become an auctioneer. Another great pastime that they shared was their enjoyment in watching their favorite sports team, the Phillies. Pete will be remembered not only for his years of service, but for the friendships he formed and the lasting impression he made on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His life reflected a quiet dedication to service, hard work, and the people he cared about. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of many years, Mary Ruth "Toby" Harris; his parents, Ralph and Betty Jane McGrady Grasso; his aunts, Cecil Ann McGrady and Wanda Tuell; his uncles, Satch McGrady and David McGrady; and his cousins, Audrey Lee, Tim McGrady, Todd McGrady, and Jeff McGrady. Left to cherish his memory are his cousins, Susan Preston, Tony Stone, and Tom McGrady, who were raised with Pete and shared a bond much like that of siblings; his cousins, Christina Mathai, Kenny McGrady, and Kay Ham; and his aunt, Anita McGrady; along with his beloved Mount Rogers National Recreation Area work family and the many friends whose lives he touched throughout the years. Pete leaves behind a legacy of service, friendship, and cherished memories. His presence will be deeply missed, but the mark he made on his family, friends, and work family will remain for years to come. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Troutdale Cemetery. May Pete’s memory remain forever among the mountains he loved and the people who were fortunate enough to call him family and friend.
