James Lewis Coffey Sr.

James Lewis Coffey Sr., 83, passed away on March 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of service, devotion, and deep love for his family and community. Born on July 12, 1942, James lived a life defined by integrity, hard work, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him. A proud Vietnam veteran, James served his country honorably in the United States Air Force. His commitment to his fellow veterans continued throughout his life as a dedicated member of the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard, where he took great pride in honoring those who served. James was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, where he found fellowship, purpose, and lifelong friendships. He retired from Bernhardt Furniture after many years of loyal service, known for his strong work ethic and steady reliability. He loved the outdoors and found joy in hunting, fishing, and tending to his garden, where he grew what many proudly called the best tomatoes anywhere. Above all, James cherished time spent with family and friends—sharing stories, laughter, singing his favorite old country songs, and the simple moments that meant the most. James now rejoins the love of his life, his wife Libby Coffey, who passed away in 2016. He was the son of Jessie and Jane Townsend Coffey and was preceded in death by siblings Jesse, Bonnie, Benson, Troy, Paul, Roy, Nellie, George, and Michael. He is survived by his sister Gladys, his children Mike (Cheryl), James Jr. (Kim), Troy (Sue), and Jesse (Jessica), and his bonus children Bub, Kim, Susie, and Mark. He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 6 great‑grandchildren, all of whom will carry forward his memory with love and pride. A service honoring James’s life will be held at Holding Funeral Home, 17 E. 3rd St N, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219 (276‑523‑1470), on Tuesday, March 17. The family will receive friends for a viewing beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by the service with Pastor Brent Dula officiating. Batten Funeral Home in Ruckersville, VA has been entrusted with the preparation and transport of his remains. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of James Coffey to the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard, PO Box 702, Hudson, NC 28638. James Lewis Coffey Sr. will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, his quiet strength, and the kindness he offered so freely. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
