Roger Eugene Susong

Roger Eugene Susong, age 71, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. We, his family, are heartbroken that he is no longer with us, but we rejoice that he is now with the Lord. He would want everyone to know that he was a born-again Christian, and his hope was that all his loved ones would be saved. Roger was born on June 10, 1955, in Middlesboro, KY, the only son of Arvil and Wanda Susong. Although he traveled at times over the years for work, his home was always in Rose Hill, VA, where he lived all his life. He loved living there, next to the mountains, where he could hike in the woods, explore waterfalls, and go camping. Over the years, Roger worked as a land surveyor, a home builder with his father, Arvil, and as the Building Official for Lee County, VA. Since the passing of his beloved mother, Wanda, in 2021, he had been a faithful daily caregiver for his father, Arvil. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and son, Roger, affectionately known as "Pop," loved his family fiercely, and it made him happy to spend time with them, especially his grandchildren. He loved music and playing the guitar, and he passed this talent on to his children and grandchildren. Roger was a friend to everyone he met and could easily strike up a conversation with a stranger. Spending time at the beach, especially in Destin, FL, was something he loved to do. He also loved animals of all kinds and enjoyed his pets, as well as all of the wild critters and birds that would come around his home. He loved taking pictures and videos of the birds, deer, skunks, and other wildlife that would show up outside his door and sending them to his family so they could enjoy them, too. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Susong. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Donna Susong, of Rose Hill, VA; three daughters, Amy Gunter (Bryan) of Duffield, VA, Rebecca Gullett (Rob) of Clinton, TN, and Rachel Tyree (Jesse) of Corbin, KY; four grandchildren, Madison Gunter, Talmadge Gunter, Olivia Gullett, and Gabby Gullett; his father, Arvil Susong, of Rose Hill, VA; and a host of family and friends who will miss him dearly. Per his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service, and the family will have a private graveside service to honor his memory at Lee Family Cemetery.
