Verna Nagel

Big Stone Gap VA Verna Nagel, 70, of the Seminary community, passed into her saviors arms after an extended illness on Tuesday (Feb. 7, 2012) at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville TN. Verna was born in Barbourville, KY on Feb. 5 1942, the daughter of Chester and Illie Vaughn Frost. Verna was of the Presbyterian faith. She was one of the matriarchs of the Big Stone Gap Presbyterian Church, where she was instrumental in home and hospital ministry. She was a avid volunteer with the Wise County Food Bank and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in KY. Verna worked for 16 years as a coil insulator for the McGraw Edison company in Harlan, KY, she was also employed for Don Kenney as a seamstress for 3 years in Dryden VA. Verna had a deep love for her family, traveling, and riding motorcycles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Illie Frost; sister, Ora Cecil Lugo, and stepson, William W. Nagel III. She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Bill Nagel; daughter, Vickie Lynn Smith, son, Harold William Smith and wife Dorothy, all of Maryville TN, son, Noble Dwight Smith III of Dryden VA; two sisters, Sarah J. Farmer of Harlan KY, and Christine Blair and husband Bobby of Mount Washington, KY; three grandchildren, Charrissa Leigh Smith of Enid OK, Christopher Brian Smith of Knoxville Tn, and V. Elizabeth Smith of Pennington Gap VA; three great grandchildren, Christian Branae Smith, Kaleb Crawford Birch, and Lillie Ann Dakota Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by all. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 10th from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap. The funeral Service will be conducted at the Big Stone Gap Presbyterian Church (302 Clinton Ave, E.) on Saturday, February 11th at 1:00 p.m with the Rev. Tony Palubicki officiating. Interment will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Christopher Smith ,Timothy Farmer and friends.
