Wilma Wolfe Smith

Johnson City, TN/Big Stone Gap, VA Wilma Wolfe Smith passed away at Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City TN, on May 11, 2013. Wilma was born in Appalachia, VA on December 31, 1929. She graduated from Appalachia High School in Appalachia VA, and attended Riverside School of Nursing in Newport News VA. In addition to being a loving, devoted mother of five, in her later life, she wrote a column for the Big Stone Gap Post and Appalachian Independent called "Out and About", which chronicled the local social scene. Wilma enjoyed socializing with friends and family, telling funny stories, reading, crossword puzzles, classic movies (as long as they weren't musicals!), being with her grandchildren, good food, especially Virginia ham and a "good, cold Co-Cola"! Wilma was preceded in death by her father Joseph Sill Wolfe Sr., her mother Edith Mae Grable Wolfe, her sister Margaret Wolfe Potter, her brother Joseph Sill Wolfe, Jr., and her nephew Jerry Stephen Potter. Wilma is lovingly remembered by her children, Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Smith Cloughly of Williamsburg VA, Bonnie Susan "Susie" Gibson of Johnson City TN, William Timothy "Tim" Smith of Gray TN, Wayne Scott Wolfe of Raymond NH and Tamara "Tami" Lynn Smith Schulte of Atlanta GA; her grandchildren, Nichole "Nikko" Cloughly Trimble of Richmond VA, John Michael Gibson of Abingdon VA, Lorin Ashleigh Gibson Carter of Pensacola FL, Mark Scott Jr., and Caroline Lee Schulte of Atlanta GA, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, her loving brother-in-law Jerry "Hoppy" Potter and her special friend Clayce Lamb, both of Appalachian Christian Village. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Appalachian Christian Village for taking such good care of "Miss Wilma" all these years. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday (May 14, 2013) at First Christian Church (640 Wood Ave., E.) in Big Stone Gap, VA. A service of remembrance will follow in the church sanctuary at 2 p.m. on Tuesday with Minister Greg Townsend. Interment will follow in Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Appalachian Christian Village, Sherwood Campus, 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City TN 37601 or First Christian Church of 640 Wood Ave E.
