Big Stone Gap, VA James Elmer “Moe” Fields, 73, passed away on Saturday (Sept. 2, 2017) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. “Moe” or “Jimmy,” as he was affectionately known, was a native of Big Stone Gap. While serving in the U. S. Army and as Construction Engineer, he lived in Kentucky, Georgia, and Alaska and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the U. S. Army, he was a police officer for the Town of Appalachia for five years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Nora (Gilliam) Fields; and four brothers. Surviving are his wife of nearly 51 years, Naomi Ruth (Neeley) Fields; one daughter, Julie Ann Fields; one granddaughter, Katherine Shiann Stacey and fiancé, Brandon Bentley; great grandson, Waylon James Bentley, all of Big Stone Gap; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Dr. Roy Smith officiating. Military graveside rites, by the Virginia National Guard Honors Team and local V.F.W. and D.A.V. posts will follow at Glencoe Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Wayne Williams, Casey Bentley, Brandon Roberts, Robbie Mabe, Kevin Hodnett and Robert Rentfrow.
