Brentwood, Tenn./Big Stone Gap, Va. Mary Edith Weems Burton, 93, of Brentwood, Tennessee, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, October 2, 2015. Mary was born on November 2, 1921 in Greeneville, Tennessee to Dr. David Douglas Weems and Macy Fillers Weems. She had lived the past 7 years in Brentwood, Tennessee with her daughter, Sue Burton Powell. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ambrose Lynn Burton; daughter, Margaret Marie Burton Gallemore; and her parents, along with 14 siblings. She is survived by daughters Deborah Burton Seay (Mitchell) of Killen, Alabama and Sue Burton Powell (Jimmy) of Brentwood, Tennessee; 1 granddaughter, Jennifer Powell; 4 grandsons, Daniel Seay (Amy), Andrew Seay (Rachel), J.H. Powell, and David Powell; 3 great-granddaughters, Caroline Seay, Annalise Seay, and Elizabeth Seay. Mary graduated from Hiwassee College in 1944 with an Associate in Arts degree. Upon graduation she went to Washington, D.C. to work in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Upon the end of World War II, and the return of her college sweetheart from the war, she married her beloved Ambrose Lynn Burton in 1946. Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap, Va., the Honeycutt Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star #157 and the Wise County Homemaker’s Club. She worked in the Dietary Division of Heritage Hall a number of years. Mary was a Godly mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family and friends lovingly called her Granny Burton. She lived an example of the Proverbs 31 woman before her family and leaves behind a rich legacy of faithfulness to God and His Word. She came to know the Lord early in her life and was richly blessed throughout her life because of her personal relationship to Christ. Therefore, her children rise up and call her blessed. Special thanks to the staff at The Blakeford for their attentive care for Mary. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 203 E. 1st St., S., in Big Stone Gap. An Order of the Eastern Star service, presented by the Big Stone Gap O.E.S. #157, will begin at 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The funeral service will follow in the church sanctuary with the Pastor Ronnie Mutter and Pastor Terry Goodman officiating. Graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. The family and friends are asked to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession. Family will serve as pallbearers. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 218, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219.
