Mrs. Maxie Lee McKinney Herron

Mrs. Maxie Lee McKinney Herron entered into eternal rest on Saturday (Sept. 12, 2015), after a ten year battle with Alzheimer’s. Maxie was born to the late George and Rebecca McKinney on December 28, 1920. She had a natural talent and studied piano under Mrs. Gibbs while at Appalachia High School. Maxie served the Lord as a pianist at Heritage Church of God for more than 30 years. In later years she became a member of First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap and also attended East Stone Gap United Methodist Church. Maxie volunteered at Lonesome Pine Hospital, the June Tolliver House, the John Fox, Jr. Museum and the Southwest Virginia Museum. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Herron; daughter, Jenelle Hamilton; five sisters; son-in-law, Lawrence C. Hamilton; and a daughter-in-law, Sonia Jane Herron. Left to cherish her memories are her daughter and son-in-law, Jerry and Brenda Palmer, with whom she lived with over the past nine years. Also surviving are three sons, Bobby E. Herron, P. Eugene (Janet) Herron and Donnie B. (Montana) Herron; two brothers, George McKinney, Jr. and Richard McKinney; five sisters, Marcella Lambert, Novella Hassloak , Connie Guill, Jackie Winder and Freda Mabe; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. A special thanks to First Choice, Dena, Charlotte, Desa and to Dr. Maloney and nurse, Kathy. Friends and family will meet at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens to celebrate her life at 1:00 p.m. Monday (September 14, 2015) with Pastor Brad Stapleton officiating.
