Sharon M. Hicks Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Big Stone Gap, VA Sharon M. Hicks, 67, passed away on Monday (March 31, 2014) at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Norton, VA. She was born and raised in Stonega, VA and lived most of her life in Big Stone Gap. Sharon, a 1964 graduate of Appalachia High School, was a retired insurance agent with Peoples Security Life Ins. Co. and a member of the East Stone Gap Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Oma (Myers) Dorton; brother, Richard Dorton; sister, Jean Jones; maternal grandfather, Christopher Myers; and her first husband, Rev. William Maness. Surviving are her husband of 29 years, Charles Hicks; children, Christine Smith and husband, Darrell of Big Stone Gap, Lisa English and husband, Daniel of Lawrenceville, GA, Bill Maness and wife, Magin of Big Stone Gap; Beth Dwyer and husband, Patrick of East Stone Gap, VA; six grandchildren, Emily Maness, Carly Maness, Haley Maness, Ryan Clark, Raechel Clark and Sarah Lane; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Randall Hicks; and a special friend and caregiver, Ellen Baird. The family would like to express their appreciation to the P.A.C.E. program in Big Stone Gap and the medical staff of Mountain View Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Thursday at the East Stone Gap Baptist Church with Dr. Lonnie Brooks and Dr. Roy Smith officiating. The body will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in East Stone Gap, VA. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.
