Mrs. Wanda Gail Johnson

W. Gail Johnson, 70, Big Stone Gap, Va. Big Stone Gap, VA Wanda Gail Johnson, 70, passed away on Monday (June 22, 2015) at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tn. She was born in Lee County, Va. and lived most of her life in Appalachia, Va. and Big Stone Gap. For over 35 years, she was the former owner/operator of beauty shops in Appalachia and Big Stone Gap, and worked at numerous others. Gail was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Appalachia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otis “Ott” and Ollie (Smith) Gilliam; and two brothers, Jerry Gilliam and Kenneth Gilliam. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Earl Johnson; two sons, Devin Johnson of Big Stone Gap and Stephen Johnson of Appalachia; six grandchildren, Evan Johnson, Nathaniel Johnson, Alissa Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Desiree Johnson and Matthew Johnson; two great grandchildren; three brothers, Tracy (Rhonda) Gilliam, Bruce (Judy) Gilliam, all of Big Stone Gap, and John (Jean) Gilliam of Bristol, Tn.; two sisters, Carol (Ron) Anderson of Knoxville, Tn. and Janice (Roger) Williams of Big Stone Gap; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Johnny Flanary and Rev. Roger Barker officiating.
