Bettye Suzanne Golden Davis- "Mrs. Bettye" Bettye Suzanne Golden Davis, of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, as she went to be with her Heavenly Father. A lifelong resident of Appalachia and Big Stone Gap, Suzanne was a woman whose presence and influence helped shape the heart of her community. Alongside her beloved sister and best friend, Barbara Golden Gibson, she co-founded and operated the cherished “Barbettes” School of Dance. Through this endeavor, Mrs. Bettye became a guiding light to generations of young girls, instilling not only a love of dance, but also confidence, discipline, and grace. To her students—her “girls,” as she so lovingly called them—she was far more than an instructor; she was a mentor, a role model, and a constant source of encouragement whose impact will live on for years to come. Suzanne was a devoted member of East Stone Gap United Methodist Church, where her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She carried that faith into all she did, especially in the way she loved her family—with steadfast devotion, kindness, and quiet strength. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unwavering support, and she treasured every moment spent with those she loved. Among the many beautiful memories she leaves behind is the quiet, enduring love she shared with her husband, Dewey. Each morning, without fail, they would greet one another with the words, “Good morning to the love of my life.” This simple yet profound tradition reflected the deep bond they shared and stands as a lasting testament to a love rooted in devotion, respect, and unwavering companionship. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Marie Golden, and her sisters, Barbara Golden Gibson, Helen Hecht Walker, Loretta Elliot, Kim Golden, and Doris Elliott Sproles, all of whom she now joins in eternal peace. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 62 years, Dewey L. Davis, of the home; her niece, Monique Gibson, of New York City, New York; along with a wide circle of friends, former students, and extended family who were blessed to know her. Suzanne’s life was one of grace, dedication, and deep love—for her family, her community, and the many young lives she helped shape. She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. The family will receive friends for a gathering to honor Bettye’s life and her enduring devotion to her family estate on May 9, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens. The service will be officiated by Gary Bush of Appalachia. The family warmly welcomes all former students and friends to attend and share their favorite memories of Suzanne. She will be carried to her final resting place by the “Riebe and Son” Horse and Carriage.
