Irene June Marcum Wells

Irene June Marcum Wells born 6/1/1940 and went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on 1/27/2026 She was proceeded in death by sister Melda Ann Marcum Sturgill, her husband Glen Allen Wells and her parents Lester James Marcum and Thelma Jane Stidham Marcum. Irene is survived by sisters Doris Marcum Still, Mary Jane Marcum Brickey, and Linda Marcum Cole; children Pamela Joy Wells Miles, Rebecca Renee Wells, David Allen Wells; grandchildren Jennifer Emmert, Karen Darnell, Hannah Grace Wells, Stephen Marcum Wells, Asher Roscoe Wells, and great grandchildren. Irene was an extremely gifted wife and mother. She was well read, a master gardener in her own right, an avid birdwatcher, an excellent cook, thorough seamstress, cross stitcher, crocheter, a creative artist, an amazing singer with great taste for music, enjoyed cutting hair, a phenomenal homemaker, great listener and encourager but not afraid to bluntly speak the truth of a matter. She imparted words of wisdom. Irene helped her parents when they ran Park Avenue Grill in Norton, Virginia. She worked at Geller's Department store in Norton in high school. She was a crossing guard at an elementary school in Johnson City, Tennessee and also worked at the hospital in Johnson City in security. Irene also babysit various children over the years. Irene particularly loved roses, trillium, cardinal flower, peonies, mountain laurel, rhododendron and marigolds to name a few. She made sure to celebrate everyone's important dates and served their favorite foods. Irene attended Park Avenue Baptist in Norton, Virginia where she and the late Glen Allen Wells met, Fort Gibson United Methodist some while living in Castlewood, Virginia, Union Church near Stephens, Virginia and Ridgeview Baptist Church near Wise, Virginia when she lived up on Guest River on the Wells farm near Esserville, Virginia. Later in life, Irene attended First Baptist in Coeburn, Virginia and back to Park Avenue Baptist. She and her husband enjoyed watching Reverend Charles Stanley and David Jeremiah. Irene and her husband faithfully supported their son in his Young Life mission towards rural teenagers. Irene was particularly fond of Joni Eareckson Tada's life mission. The family of Irene Wells will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February, 13 2026, at Holding Funeral Home, in Big Stone Gap, VA. (17 E. 3rd St. N. Big Stone Gap) Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday, February, 13, 2026, in the chapel of Holding Funeral Home, in Big Stone Gap, VA. with David Allen Wells officiating, Special Music will be provided by Rebecca Renee Wells. Her burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026, at the Wells Family Cemetery in Wise, VA. Family and friends will meet at 10:00 a.m. at Holding Funeral Home to follow in procession. Pallbearers will be David Allen Wells, Stephen Marcum Wells, Asher Roscoe Wells, Shannon Brickey Holding Funeral Home of Big Stone is in charge of the arrangements.
