Mr. James Harold "Jim" Pierce

Yorktown, VA James "Jim" Harold Pierce, 85, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Jim was born in Appalachia, VA and was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. L.A. (Dora) Pierce of Big Stone Gap, VA. He attended school in Big Stone Gap and later served in the Merchant Marines and the United States Army. Jim began his career in the Newport News Shipyard in 1952. He continued his work as a quality control inspector in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1978 and retired from there in 1991. He was a Master Mason having completed sixty years of Membership in the Masonic Fraternity. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his family and took special care to make sure they knew they were loved, cared for, and protected. Becoming a great grandparent was a great joy to him and he was especially proud of his first great grandson, Axley, who is now two years old. He was caring and compassionate to his wife of 63 years, Mildred Brickey Pierce. They took faithful care of each other through stages of illness that came to them at different times in their lives. Jim is survived by his wife, Mildred Brickey Pierce; children, Debbie Pierce Atkinson (Dexter), Becky Pierce Mason (Tom), and James H. Pierce II (Cynthia); grandchildren, Joey Carroll, Mary Ellen Sick (Kellen), David Mason (Elizabeth), Elizabeth Pierce, Ryan Pierce, and Jared Pierce. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Connie Pierce, another sister-in-law, Inez Blevins, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The services will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap, VA. The family will receive friends at noon and the service will be held at 2:00 P.M. with Charles Miller officiating, and followed by interment and military rites, by the Va. National Guard Honors Team and local V.F.W. and D.A.V. posts, at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
