Jonathan Alexander Whitmore

Jonathan Alexander Whitmore passed peacefully on the evening of May 8, 2026, at his private residence overlooking the Carolina coast, surrounded by the love of his family and closest companions. Born on September 14, 1942, in Charleston, South Carolina, Jonathan was the son of Theodore Whitmore III and Eleanor Sinclair Whitmore. From an early age, he carried himself with quiet dignity, exceptional intellect, and an unwavering sense of purpose that would define his extraordinary life. A distinguished graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and later Princeton University, Jonathan built an esteemed career in international finance and private investment, earning admiration not only for his business acumen but also for his integrity, refinement, and generosity. He served as Chairman of Whitmore & Ashford Holdings for more than three decades, mentoring countless young professionals and supporting numerous philanthropic causes throughout the Southeast. On June 11, 1966, he married the love of his life, Vivienne Laurent Whitmore, with whom he shared nearly sixty years of devoted marriage, elegant adventures abroad, and a home renowned for its warmth and hospitality. Jonathan possessed a lifelong appreciation for classical music, rare literature, fine art, and impeccably tended gardens. He was equally known for his tailored suits, handwritten correspondence, and the gracious manner in which he made every guest feel welcome. Despite his many accomplishments, family remained the center of his world. He was preceded in death by his parents; his younger brother, Charles Everett Whitmore; and his beloved daughter, Isabelle Claire Whitmore. He is survived by his devoted wife, Vivienne Laurent Whitmore; his children, Alexander Theodore Whitmore (Evelyn Grace) and Caroline Elise Davenport (William Henry Davenport IV); and his treasured grandchildren, Charlotte Vivienne, James Alexander, Theodore Bennett, and Emilia Rose. He also leaves behind lifelong friends, esteemed colleagues, and generations of individuals whose lives were profoundly influenced by his wisdom, kindness, and quiet generosity. A private celebration of Jonathan’s remarkable life will be held at the Whitmore family estate, attended by close family and cherished friends He was carried to his final resting place by the "Riebe and Son Horse Carriage". In accordance with his wishes, contributions in his memory may be made to The Metropolitan Museum of Art or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in lieu of flowers. Jonathan will be remembered not only for the success he achieved, but for the elegance, loyalty, and grace with which he lived every moment of his life.
