Nannie Pearl Austin — Big Stone Gap, VA Nannie Pearl Austin, age 92, passed peacefully from this life on Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at home with her family by her side. Born in the 1930s, she was the cherished daughter of the late Joseph Nelson Church and Sarah Evelyn (Sturgill) Church. Nannie lived her life with a grace and gentleness that touched everyone who knew her. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, she poured her heart into raising her children and nurturing her family. She found great joy in her garden—tending her flowers with the same care and devotion she gave to those she loved. A gifted cook, Nannie’s kitchen was a place of warmth, comfort, and countless cherished memories. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family. Her presence was a quiet blessing—steady, loving, and filled with a simple genuine heart and kind word. Nannie’s life was a testament to love, devotion, and the beauty of a gentle spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her. Nannie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William “Bill” Austin; her son, Danny Joe Austin; her grandson, Jamey Joe Austin; and several of her siblings. Left to honor her memory are her children: Billy Austin (Jean) of Big Stone Gap; Douglas Austin (Ann) of Big Stone Gap; Deborah Bush of Big Stone Gap; Tim Austin (Meshell) of Big Stone Gap; and Christopher Austin (Kim) of Marion, VA. She is also lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Barbara Austin of Big Stone Gap.Her grandchildren—Kristina Smith; Bill Austin Jr. (Patty); Michael Austin (Kelly); Jesse Austin (Erin); Amy Campbell; Jeffrey Hylton (Peggy); Travis Hylton (Krissy); Pamela Woodward (Jasten); Shawn Austin; Ryan Austin (Rachel); Samuel Austin; Anna Beth Addison; Maddie Austin; and Ava Austin. She was blessed as well with 18 great-grandchildren and 16 great-great-grandchildren, her siblings, Omer Church of Kansas and Gertrude Proffit of Florida, along with numerous other close relatives and dear friends. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Jeffrey Hylton, Leah Hylton & Deborah Bush,for their care of Nannie. The family will receive friends for a visitation on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at Holding Funeral Home of Big Stone Gap, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. (17 E. 3rd. St. N. Big Stone Gap, VA) The Funeral Service will be conducted following in the funeral home's sanctuary with Pastor Dr. Nick Brewer Officiating, special music will be provided by Vernon and Reva Boggs. Her committal service will take place following, where she will be laid to rest in the American Legion Cemetery.
